My friend Cliff Reid has been churning out brilliant teachings on the Mind of the Resuscitationist for decades now. He has recently reposted a treasure-trove of old videos on his youtube channel. I am now watching his 10 Tips to Train Teams for Performance and I figured I would highlight it here:
Tip 1 – Link Governance and Training
Daily coffee and cases
Monthly M&M, Airway Audit, Blood Audit, Trauma Audit
Learning from Excellence
Tip 2 – Get Hands On
Flipped classroom that presents the theory in a Virtual Learning Environment
Everything in the induction is then hands-on
Tip 3 – Train Teams not Individuals
Get your buddies, your team to shine–not individuals
Expeditionary mindset, “What can I do to get this team to where it needs to go?” from Hadfield's book below
Tip 4 – Install Mindware
Two books recommended by Cliff to cultivate the right mindset
- An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth
- Extreme Ownership
Team mindset
Threat/Challenge Appraisal
Tactical Language
Light, heat, noise, crowd
Tip 5 – Train as You Fight
Maximize fidelity in simulation
Tip 6 – Use Real Tissue
they use butchered animal remains
Tip 7 – What is Tested is Learned
They test at the end of each induction portion
Tip 8 – Push the Limits
Stress inoculation training/testing
Add confederates to distract or attempt to
Tip 9 – Get Great Help
they have volunteers from the ambulance service and trainee paramedics
Tip 10 – Get Feedback

Brilliant approach to teams and training!
It’s a tragedy that in Canada, unless you’re at an academic center, your shop probably won’t support this kind of training, regardless of the positive impact it has on the teams providing the care and the patients receiving it
If you are not working in an academic facility in Canada, it is quite unlikely that your shop would provide assistance for this sort of backrooms game training. This is a tragic situation.
