Before ETT tube delivery, place your finger to the right of the laryngoscope to ensure there is space to advance the ETT.
The SALAD Poke is intended to create space for tracheal tube delivery by moving the laryngoscope towards the midline to overcome the unfortunate tendency to crowd the right corner of the mouth during setup of laryngoscopy. It also can be utilized to push the tongue leftward of the blade out of the path of tracheal tube delivery. Jim learned these techniques both in the SALAD mannequin (Airway Larry has a small mouth) and in clinically using the newer Glidescope model, which notoriously does a bad job at tongue control due to how narrow it is laterally.
