This is Part II, you need to Watch Part I First!
So I've been giving this talk for Grand Rounds for a decade now. I've kept it off the podcast so I would have something unheard to discuss when I come to visit a program. I don't do many grand rounds any more–so the time has come, here is:
Laryngoscope as a Murder Weapon: Oxygenation Kills
There are two other LaMW talks:
Most of the things discussed are elaborated upon on the EMCrit Preox Page.
This will be a two-parter. The things we will cover over the course of these two segments are:
- PreOx (Including VaPoX)
- Preventing Deox with ApOx and Apenic CPAP
- ReOx

Made me wait for it didn’t you. Was listening to the discussion of the need to pull out and stop intubation attempts when the sats start to drop wondering if you were going to do the Dan Davis pulse ox lag reference. Thanks for getting there! I think this is one of the most ignored phenomenon in airway management and management of the patient with respiratory disease. It applies in any setting where pulse oximetry is used.
Thank you for making that point.
Mike
absolutely! though I had an entire episode with Dan on the subject: https://emcrit.org/podcasts/oxygen-physiology/
Wow Scott.you’ve enlightened the spot that I’ve always perceived as problematic but I’ve never had the wisdom and cold blood to analyse.
Thanks
Hey Scott,
Awesome as always. I’ve heard of the pulse ox lag but didn’t know it could reflect 2 minutes in the past! I was curious, do you have any experience with the LMA fastrach as an adjunct in difficult airway management and subsequent ETT placement?
