Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a common cause of admission to the neurological ICU, as well as a complication of critical illness that may occur among patients within any ICU. The stroke neurology team will take the lead in managing these patients (including decisions regarding tPA and endovascular intervention). This chapter focuses more on aspects of supportive care which are more typically the purview of the general intensivist.
