I’m not sure why you think that an effort to make FOAM sustainable makes me a “douche-bag”. I am someone who think that in order to have a sustainable presence in the world of online social media, organizational structures are important. There are so many examples of magnifying great work by combining forces and to actually create systems, and you yourself have had discussions with me about how easy it is to burn out trying to do everything yourself. Structures are important. Structures allow people to actually spread out the work, to involve others, and to open up FOAM to… Read more »
T I think you are amazing and this was no personal strike against you or indeed any who would self-identify in this third wave. I am dreadfully sorry if I came across that way. It is the work I think has gone astray. I vetted the recording with many in the 1st and 2nd wave before posting. There is uniform agreement, at least with the folks I conversed with. We found the 3rd wave post in message and in implication to be condescending and against the essence of FOAM. You have produced great FOAM, please, please continue to do so.… Read more »
Hi Scott, I guess I’m either being naïve or not understanding the issue at hand. As I read through the “third wave” it strikes me as mostly made up of educators who are: 1. Trying to legitimately determine quality of FOAM (no easy task, and more of an academic discussion anyhow) 2. Looking for ways to get scholarly credit for the creation of FOAM (important to bring the community mainstream, i.e. “cross the chasm” from early adopters into the mainstream. I believe we’re there, but I’m not sure if >17% of all EM physicians are actually using FOAM. 3. Curating… Read more »
Dr. Wiengart,
I’ve started reposting your podcasts on a FB group that I’m part of (Critical care, trauma anesthesia, emergency medicine). Seems as if many people are becoming addicted, as I am. Your podcasts are simply the best out there. I find myself listening to them over and over while I’m on the treadmill.
On a personal note. I enjoyed meeting you and your family at the Atlantis conference.
Thanks again,

The ONLY problem I have with EMCrit is that Scott will burnout/get killed on the highway/whatever. So, in the sense that structure might keep EMCrit going in such an event, then I’m for it in that very narrow sense, but that’s about it. I NEVER pass up an opportunity to encourage other medics, nurses, and doctors to check out EMCrit. I am always very pleasantly surprised that many doctors know EMCrit and know Scott’s work. Because I work in a university town our service gets a lot of “4 year” EMTs, some of whom are hoping for a career in… Read more »
I’ve added my comments and an expanded explanation to Teresa’s post here.

I’d be interested in your thoughts.

Hi Scott Agree with what you have said here. As a FOAM producer (small bit) – I do not see how having a “structure” within the community will help me produce good content, nor my consumers consumption of said content. Having internal structure within a given resource certainly helps the consumers. However, this is just about having a strong editorial process and navigable site. I do find the meta-FOAM stuff somewhat distracting from my core “job” of making content, tacit learning and collaboration. The folk wanting to describe & structure FOAM is interesting but really belongs in a Social sciences… Read more »
