I believe that these studies on the success rate of intubation with a bougie are simply an attempt to validate with numbers what any experienced professional already knows. If you have a decent bougie and are trained in how to use it, it is simply much easier to intubate a patient with it in any situation, especially with a video laryngoscope. Of course, experienced doctors do not need a bougie in the vast majority of situations. If well-positioned and well-sedated, you should not have a problem in 95% of patients.
