For the detailed oriented:
PROS: It just works, stick stuff on it, it scans it quickly, accurately, and doesn't jam. From a hardware standpoint this thing nears perfection.
Tech Support- this is pretty wild - it's like a nostalgic early 90's flashback - they have this very old fashioned concept of tech support at Fujitsu where when you call you get to talk to a real human being, in the United States (CA), who is actually knowledgeable about the product and software. I can't remember the last time I had such an experience with a consumer product, especially electronics. Go ahead and call me a grandpa for liking this very unhip kind of tech support, but it was a breath of fresh air for me.
-Tagging - it adds some kind of plugin into acrobat that allows tagging metadata and this is searchable in windows - very nice. Sounds like even windows 10 won't have native universal tagging which is totally crazy to me.
CONS: The software leaves just a few things to be desired.
-The receipt software is pretty slick, but a little finicky and kind of weird how it handles backups (manual).
-Blank page detection options could be a little better - it strongly favors keeping all but the blankest of blank pages (better safe than sorry), but it would be nice if it then gave you the option to preview a subset of "highly likely blank pages." or if it gave you any way at all to delete pages before saving the file in the save to folder option. I may just start scanning directly to Acrobat to have this option available.
-The Snapscan organizer app is quite nice - it could use a little slicker tagging interface, but I don't use it at all because I want to be able to manage pdfs not scanned with the snapscan seamlessly with ones that are and this only lets you work with.
- The Evernote push - Fujitsu appears to somehow be in bed with Evernote and they make it very easy to scan to evernote. While most of the websites on the subject of paperless navigation advocate for using evernote to store your data, I can't emphasize enough how nuts this is! Evernote does not employ encryption at rest, and they have been hacked before and will be again. This means all the stuff you scan and send to evernote is just sitting on their servers in its raw form, waiting for Evernote employees, the NSA, or anyone else that gains access to their system to view. The vast majority of people will not enjoy much benefit from universal cloud access to all their scanned documents - a simple piece of sync software to keep documents on all your personal systems is usually plenty (I recommend AeroFS, but there are lots of options). The touted advantage of Evernote is really just its fairly rudimentary tagging system. There are other options to do this on Mac (some pretty good ones) and windows (surprisingly limited good options). I like a multi-platform program called TagSpaces for this - it's a bit rough around the edges, but is simple, compatible with windows built in search, and doesn't require special metadata or a centralized database which makes it very versatile.
