So my friend Laura Duggan has been engaged in a multi-prong project to save lives through the dissemination of surgical airway information. We've previously discussed the airway app to collect data on front-of-neck-access. Now she is releasing a cric model that blows the old ones I used to recommend out of the water. You want one of these models… You want one to practice the moves of surgical airway at least once a month. Laura is not charging for this model, she is releasing it into the wild as FOAM. You'll have to get it 3d printed yourself–we'll tell you how

get formlabs standard resin as the material and it will resist scalpels beautifully!

Got my model
Went with the strong & flexible plastic for $21.78
feel is rough but function is great
Buy Kevlar if you plan on wearing this cric trainer

If you decide to wear or have colleagues wear this, it is at your own risk. It is inherently dangerous to come at anyone with a scalpel

Scott, what costs have you seen to get this 3D printed?
shapeways is charging $20 US, but I want to see the quality of the model before I recommend it. 3Dsmith is charging $30 CAD, $25 if you order >50 at once. Don’t know shipping charges. There is a 3D printing house pretty much anywhere in the world now. You just need to tell them what you are using it for so they can pick the right material.
So are these single use? 3d printing is a great way to prototype and make tweaks to a model to refine it, but once you have the layout that you want, if you are “mass” producing a model without any changes, injection molding would be the way to go. Once the cast is created, you can create a lot of copies at a very low cost. There is of course fixed capital costs for tooling and set up, but if this is something lots of people wanted might be the way to go.
nope-print once, use for years. yes injection mold would be great, but then you need a central selling source.
I just had one made at my local Library for $4.60.
do some scalpel tests and let us know how it does. picts???
Just printed one in pink PLA on my own printer. Material cost is about one dollar, printing time 4 hours.
It has good cut resistance (and after cutting off all the excess support material from the printing process, I know what I’m talking about…).
Works fine! Nice! Just don’t leave it in the car on a hot day: PLA becomes soft at about 70° Celsius!
PS: It seems you can’t upload pics.
Could you share your printer settings? Resolution, supports, fill, etc. Thanks.
Hi Clark,
It’s been a while ago, but I think something like these settings should work:
-0.4 nozzle
-0.15 to 0.2 layer height
-50% infill
-supports are needed!
worked fine on my Ultimaker 2+
Kind regards, Flo
It appears the model has been removed from the website is there anywhere else it is available? I have an ED doctor who would like me to print a couple.
Thank you
Thanks for this, I’m going to try it on my Prusa Mk3+ . Which orientation did you print it?
Love this! I am big on 3D Printed task trainers for my shops EM residents. I have made IO, LP, and surgical cric models but having a wearable device is pretty cool! 3D printing has become sort of an obsession now have 7 printers
Hi Mina,
Your models sound interesting too! Are they available as .stl-files somewhere???
Will print a cric trainer from basic PLA and see if it is resistant enough…
Hi Florian & Mina, There are a range of options for producing your own STL files for 3D Printing: 1) Design your own with CAD software (Fusion360, SketchUp, SketchFab) – Tall learning curve if you have no CAD experience but the advantage is a clean model free of IP issues which you can make adaptations to as needed. 2) Pull from CT DICCOM image sets – Relatively easy to do with free software such as ITK-Snap and Slicer. Shorter learning curve. Potential issues with use of patient derived dataset which has not yet been fully worked out. Mina – Are… Read more »
Hey there,
i’d love to implement this in our airway training.
German Formlab studio asks for dimensions. Could you help me out? Or are they included in the .stl?
Thanks so much!
cheers
Ole
all should be in the file
I am looking for the STL files for this device to print for an ED doctor upon request. But when I click on the link it says the files are in the owners trash. Does anyone have these files or have they been removed from public use?
Thank you
